Installing a skylight isn’t complicated. Installing one that stays watertight for the next twenty years is where experience matters.

We install Velux skylights the way it was taught at their manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada. The same manufacturer-spec installation standards apply to every brand we work with, Velux, CrystaLite, Solar Industries, and custom glass systems.

The common thread behind every successful installation is the same: proper framing, proper flashing, and the right skylight for the space. When one of those gets skipped, problems show up, usually as leaks, sometimes as excessive heat, sometimes as a skylight that never looked right from day one.

What a Skylight Installation Actually Includes

A complete skylight installation involves four separate scopes of work:

1. Structural Framing

The roof opening must be properly framed so loads are transferred around the new opening. Sometimes a skylight fits neatly between existing rafters. Sometimes a rafter must be cut and structural headers installed. We’ll determine what’s required during the estimate and include it in the scope before work begins.

2. Skylight Installation

The skylight itself is installed and secured according to manufacturer requirements. Whether it’s a Velux, CrystaLite, Solar Industries, or custom glass unit, the installation details vary slightly, but the goal remains the same: create a durable, weather-tight assembly.

3. Flashing and Waterproofing

This is where most skylight failures occur. The majority of leaking skylights we inspect are suffering from flashing problems rather than product failures. Proper flashing should direct water away from the skylight and back onto the roofing system. We don’t rely on sealants to perform the job of flashing. Caulk eventually fails. Proper flashing becomes part of the roof.

4. Interior Rough-In

Once the skylight is installed, the interior shaft and opening are prepared for drywall finishing. Most homeowners have their painter or drywall contractor complete the final finish work afterward.

Choosing the Right Skylight

Not every room needs the same skylight. A hallway has different lighting needs than a kitchen. A north-facing room behaves differently than a south-facing room. A flat roof requires a different approach than a steep tile roof.

That’s why we evaluate each installation individually rather than recommending the same product every time.

We install:

  • Velux
  • CrystaLite
  • Solar Industries
  • Kingspan Light + Air
  • Lane-Aire
  • Acra Light Solar

The best choice depends on the roof, the room, the desired amount of daylight, and your budget.

Why Insulated Glass Matters in Los Angeles

Heat gain matters. A skylight that performs well in Seattle may not perform well on a south-facing roof in Los Angeles.

For many installations, insulated low-e glass provides a significant improvement in comfort compared to older acrylic dome systems. It allows natural daylight into the space while reducing unwanted solar heat gain. The difference is especially noticeable in kitchens, living rooms, studios, and commercial spaces that receive direct afternoon sun.

We’ll discuss glazing options during the estimate and recommend what’s appropriate for your specific location and roof orientation.

Roof Types We Install On

We install skylights on virtually every roofing system common in Southern California, including:

  • Clay tile
  • Concrete tile
  • Composition shingle
  • TPO roofing
  • EPDM roofing
  • Built-up roofing
  • Low-slope and flat roofs
  • Wood shake (where applicable)

Each roof system requires different flashing details and installation methods. Tile roofs require careful tile removal and replacement around the opening. Flat roofs require properly constructed curbs and waterproof integration. The details vary, but the objective remains the same: a watertight installation that becomes part of the roof rather than an interruption in it.

How Long Does Installation Take?

Most residential skylight installations are completed in a single day. A typical installation includes:

  • Layout and opening preparation
  • Structural framing
  • Skylight installation
  • Flashing and waterproofing
  • Interior rough-in

Projects involving multiple skylights, structural modifications, or large custom glass systems may require additional time. Interior drywall finishing and painting are generally completed afterward by others.

Skylight Installation Cost in Los Angeles

Most residential skylight installations fall between $1,800 and $3,400.

The primary cost factors are:

  • Roof type
  • Skylight size
  • Framing requirements
  • Accessibility
  • Glazing selection

A standard Velux FCM installation on a composition shingle roof typically runs between $1,800 and $2,600. The same installation on a clay tile roof generally runs between $2,400 and $3,400 because of the additional labor required for tile removal, flashing, and reset. Custom skylights and large glass systems are quoted individually.

During the estimate we’ll explain exactly what affects pricing so you can make an informed decision before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a new skylight?

In most cases, yes. New roof openings generally require permits. Requirements vary between Los Angeles and neighboring jurisdictions such as Pasadena, Glendale, and Beverly Hills. We can help determine what’s required for your project.

Can you install a skylight on any roof pitch?

Usually yes. The skylight type and installation method simply need to match the roof conditions. Very low-slope roofs may require raised curbs, while steeper roofs may use different mounting systems.

What size skylight should I choose?

There isn’t a universal answer. Room size, ceiling height, roof orientation, rafter spacing, and desired light levels all influence sizing. We’ll recommend a size that fits both the structure and the space below.

"Called on a Tuesday, they were at the house Thursday morning. The estimate was detailed, broken down line by line, and came in right in the middle of what I'd seen quoted elsewhere. Went with them because they actually explained what they were going to do and why. No surprises on the day."
